William “Bill” McLain
Cleveland, TN – William R. McLain,84, passed away peacefully on December 8,2017, with his loving wife, Margaret McLain, daughters and son-in-law by his side. He was born on April 3, 1933 in Rockland, Maine. He was preceded in death by his parents Ashton and Beatrix McLain; his brother Reverend Joel McLain of Biddeford, Maine; and his daughter Karen Elizabeth McLain. Bill was a graduate of Rockland District High School in 1951 and attended The Rockland School of Commerce for Business and served in the United States Air Force.
Bill lived in the Rockland area for 60 years which included a home in Owls Head on Crescent Beach and a cottage in Union on Crawford Pond, where all the family creating years of fond memories. He spent most of his career at Kalloch Fuel Services as Manager. He and his wife lived in Nokomis, Florida for 14 years where Bill worked as a Community Association Manager. Upon retirement they moved to Cleveland, TN in 2007 to be near family. He was loved by his family and he is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret Sawyer McLain; his daughters Brenda Vinal (Daryl) of Appleton, Maine and Carol Almy (Erik) of Cleveland, Tennessee; and his son David McLain (Sharon) of Birmingham, Alabama. He was a grandfather to ten grandchildren: Chris (Kendra), Brandon (Lexi), Ashley, Travis, Ryan, Matt, Jake, Hunter (Rebecca), Sierra, and Storm. He was a great-grandfather to four great-grandchildren: Adrian, Mason, Aisley, and Gavin. Survivors also include several nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he was very fond of.
Bill was a Methodist. He was a member of Rockland Elks #1008, Mid-Coast Shrine Club, and Rockland Lions Club. He enjoyed his hobbies of reading, golf, travel, rug hooking, building doll houses, playing card, and spending time with family.
A family graveside service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home in Rockland, Maine.
