Walt Yowarsky, 86, 1st Lieutenant Air Force Veteran formerly of Cleveland, Ohio and a resident of Cleveland went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Hospice of Chattanooga. He was born on May 10, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of the late Michael and Anna Yowarsky. He was an active member of the Church of God until his health prevented him from attending. Walter was a faithful husband and loving father and grandfather. He was a long time NFL player, coach and scout. He began his career in 1951, spent 50 years in the NFL, ending it with 25 years as a scout with the Dallas Cowboys. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds baseball club out of high school but decided to play football instead. He played for Bear Bryant at the University of Kentucky where he was named MVP of the 1951 Sugar Bowl helping the Wildcats stop the Oklahoma Sooners 31 game winning streak. He was the first defensive lineman to be named MVP. While at Kentucky he had the honor of Kentucky Colonel bestowed upon him by the governor of Kentucky. Walt Yowarsky was a 3rd pick of the Washington Redskins in the 1951 draft, He went on to play for the New York Giants where he was a starting defensive end on their 1956 World Championship team. He played 8 positions in the 1950's with four teams: Redskins, Lions, Giants and the 49ers and coaching for 6 more. After retiring as a player in the 1958 season, he went on to a successful NFL coaching and scouting career. Yowarsky was both an offensive and defensive coordinator in the league until the mid 70's before starting his scouting career with the Dallas Cowboys. He went on to win 5 Super Bowls during his time in Dallas, he one of only a handful of men that had a 50 year career in the NFL. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bobbie Patterson Yowarsky, son Michael (Kim) Yowarsky, daughter Lisa Simmons (Scott), and son Van Yowarsky, four granddaughters, Courtney and Savannah Simmons and Maclain and Bridger Yowarsky. He was loved and will be dearly missed. There will be no public service and the family requests that memorials be made to Life Bridges of Cleveland, 764 Old Chattanooga Pike S.W., Cleveland, TN. 37311 or Alzheimer's Association.
