Obituary

Janice Marie Day Cheek, age 74, passed from this Earth on July 8, 2015 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee after a lengthy bout with Leukemia. Ms. Cheek was born in Rogersville, TN and became a lifelong resident of Cleveland, TN graduating from Bradley High School in 1958 and continued her education at Cleveland State Community College prior to obtaining a Bachelor Degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga with Honors.

Ms. Cheek is preceded in death by her parents Fred and Grace Day both of Hawkins County, TN.

Surviving Ms. Cheek are her four children; Sammy Cheek and wife Lisa Duncan of Maryville, TN, Lindsay D. Moreland of Cleveland, TN, Joel Cheek and wife Laura of Newnan, GA, and Shawn Cheek and wife Kimberly of Cleveland, TN, four grandchildren; Will Moreland, Madison Moreland, Rachel Cheek, and Samantha Cheek. Ms. Cheek remained close to her former husband, Sam Cheek of Notasulga, AL and long time companion, Claude Jones of Dalton, GA.

After a thirty-four year career with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, Ms. Cheek retired in 2008 and became very involved in a variety of local organizations like the Cleveland Shade Tree Board, the Bradley County Democratic Womens Club, the Board of the Polk County Library, a Corridor K Committee in Polk County, Polk County Chamber of Commerce, FOLA, and the Museum Center at 5ive Points. Ms. Cheek was also an advocate working with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

For all of Jans many friends she is well known for her love of education, history, politics, blue grass music, and painting. Becoming involved in tracing her own familys genealogy, Jan embraced a new avenue of technology and developed friendships with cousins from all over the country. Among the many accomplishments, most notably would be shaping her childrens lives to value education in pursuit of their own successes. Thats my legacyits my children! Jan also continued to apply this philosophy with her grandchildren. Through various life experiences, Jan learned the importance of being accepting of others and not intentionally harming anyone.

A private burial was held in her honor at Highland Cemetery in Rogersville, TN on July 11, 2015.

All Jans friends and family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life to be held on July 30, 2015 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Museum Center at 5ive Points in Cleveland, TN.

In lieu of flowers, a request is being made to please, take part in planting a tree in her honor at a location of your choice.
