Evelynne Cutts Mashburn

February 27, 1923 — April 4, 2018

Evelynne Cutts Mashburn, aged 95, died peacefully on April 4, 2018 in the early morning hours. Evelynne, known to many as “Susie,” and others as “Obasan” (translation: “Grandmother” in Japanese), was born on February 27, 1923 in Blue Ridge, Georgia, the eldest daughter of Loomis Clinton Cutts, Reverend, and Vera Harrison Cutts.

Evelynne graduated from High School in Copperhill, Tennessee, where she met her future husband, Mayo L. Mashburn. She attended Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia, and Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee. Throughout high school and college, Evelynne actively played basketball (she was the captain in college), was involved in religious youth organizations and Church groups, and was crowned the May Queen of LMU her junior year. After receiving her B.A. Degree, Evelynne began employment in the Engineering Department of Tennessee Copper Company in Copperhill, Tennessee. Thereafter, she taught 8th and 9th grade English and Social Studies in Ringgold, Georgia (Catoosa County Board of Education), 7th grade English and Social Science in Decatur, Georgia (DeKalb County Board of Education), and later she worked in the First National Bank of Atlanta, Georgia.

Evelynne married Mayo L. Mashburn on March 16, 1946 in McCaysville, Georgia. They began a military life when he was re-called to active duty in 1952 during the Korean Crisis. From this point onwards, Mayo and Evelynne began to travel the world together (definition: moved homes and lives depending upon where Mayo was assigned to duty, including Tachikowa, Japan, the Air Force Academy in Colorado, Wiesbaden, Germany, Montgomery, Alabama, Washington, D.C., and more) in Mayo’s service to the United States in the Judge Advocate General’s Office of the Air Force. Evelynne was, at all times, Mayo’s most ardent supporter and a devoted wife. During Mayo’s military tour in Japan, Evelynne gave birth to their daughter, Jane Evelyn. Upon Mayo’s retirement from active service, Mayo and Evelynne returned to their southern heritage and roots, establishing their family in Cleveland, Tenn.

Throughout her life, Evelynne was a devout Christian and, while in Cleveland, served as an active member of First Baptist Church. Evelynne loved flowers and nature, and enjoyed being a part of the Ocoee Garden Club for many years, serving as President of the organization from 1974-1976.

Evelynne is survived by her daughter, Jane Williams of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and her granddaughter, Morey Williams, of Villanova, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, suggested memorial donations include one of Evelynne’s favorite organizations, M. O. R. E Ministries,
P. O. Box 885, Cleveland TN 37364-0885 or to HearthHospice, 1800A Rossville Ave, Suite 7
Chattanooga TN 37408 who, along with Evelynne’s caretakers, provided comfort, loving care and service to Evelynne during her final days.

The family will receive friends from 12:00pm until 1:00pm on Friday April 6, 2018 at First United Methodist Church on North Ocoee Street in Cleveland, TN. A celebration of life service will take place at 1:00pm at the church on Friday. Interment will take place at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. You are invited to share a personal memory of Evelynne or your condolences with her family at her online memorial located at www.companionfunerals.com. Companion Funeral and Cremation Service and the Cody family are honored to assist the Mashburn family with these arrangements.
