William "Bill" Hughes

Bill Hughes, a lifelong resident of Charleston passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2022 at the age of 83. The loss has left a hole in the hearts of those privileged enough to be called his family or friend. Bill enjoyed farming, raising cattle, and gardening. He was a graduate of Calhoun high school. Bill retired after 41 years of employment at Bowater. He was a member of Council Baptist Church and served as a deacon for several years. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Grace Hughes, parents H.L. Hughes Sr. and Ruth Hambright, two brothers H.L. Hughes Jr. and Bob Hughes.

Bill leaves behind a family that loved him beyond measure. Survivors include: three daughters Faye Campbell, Mae (Jeff) Spence, and Kaye (Rusty) Powell; grandchildren include: Jeremy (Carrie) Rominger, Justin (Brandie) Rominger, Heidi (John) Robella, Logan Spence, and Kaitlyn Spence; great grandchildren: Kyndahl Rominger, Emily (Kyle) Pindar, Cooper Rominger, Fiona Robella, Quinn Robella, Aria Robella. Great great grandchild Taylynn Pindar; two sisters Jo Lyle and Alice Miller; nephews: H.L. Hughes III, Dewey Hughes, Doug Hughes, and Billy Lyle; nieces include: Alisa Miller and Bobbie Jo Henry. In addition to these he leaves behind many cousins, great nieces, and nephews.

Funeral arrangements will be handled by Companion Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Saturday September 24th at Philippi Baptist Church from 11am until 2pm. The service will be held at 2pm followed by interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Officiating the service will be Joe Hatcher and Sammy Hooker. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Rominger, Justin Rominger, Logan Spence, Shane Hughes, Mason Hughes, and Billy Lyle. Honorary pallbearers include Gary McAlister, Glenn McAlister, Dean McAlister, and Larry Stevenson.
