Wanda Lee Harris Jones passed away April 10th, 2025, at her home surrounded by family. Wanda's family will receive friends on Thursday, April 17th, 2025 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. with a funeral service beginning at 7 p.m. located at Companion Funeral Home of Athens.
Wanda graduated from Baroness Erlanger Nursing in 1968 and worked in several local hospitals. She started the HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) in McMinn County where she taught for 15 years. She taught students from McMinn High and Central High during school hours and adult CNA classes at night. She certified several students of CNA's, and many pursued a vocation in the health field after completion of the course. She worked for 8 years as a hospice and home health nurse where she enjoyed helping patients and their families cope with their illnesses. Before retirement, she enjoyed her years at Tri-County Center of Athens. She loved working with clients, and they loved working with her as well.
She was a member of the First church of God in Englewood since birth where worked several capacities. She really loved working with the youth as the youth director, VBS director, Sunday School teacher, pianist, choir, and helping with special activities.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, William J. Harris and Dortha Wampler Harris of Englewood; mother and father in law: Casie and Mamie Martin Jones of Athens; her cherished husband, Bennie Jones Sr.; son, Lynn Carroll; stepson, Bennie Jones Jr.; special sister, Barbara Harris Howell; her much-loved daughter-in-law, Tina Burke Jones of Athens; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Left to mourn her passing are her loving children: Shayne Jones, Dawn Jones Wallace, both of Athens, Shona Moore Lee (Bob) Of Knoxville; grandchildren: Kimberly Jones Moritz(Neil) of Ohio, Bridget Jones Maddux (Clint) of Calhoun, Aaron Carrol (Shauna) of Athens, Michael Lee of Knoxville, Travis Wallace of Niota, Skylar Jones of Sweetwater and Megan Jones of Chattanooga, Alex and Hallie Maddux of Athens; great-grandchildren: Taylor, Ethan, and Connor Morrow, Chandler Womac, Kennedy, Arianna and Landon Moritz, Logan and Dylan Carroll, Tyler and Bryson Lee; precious god-daughter, Jasilyn Daniels of Athens; sister, Jan Harris Dingess (Mike) of Englewood; special nieces Mallory Dingess Sanchez (Jesus) and Madison Dingess; nephew, Bryan Sledge of Athens; and great nephews, Luka and Reuben Sanchez of Englewood, and Will Sledge of Athens.
She knew at an early age that she wanted to be a nurse and help care for the sick and elderly. Wanda was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend to all. She will be greatly missed.
