Virgil A. Shadden, age 83 of Athens passed away at U.T. Hospital in Knoxville, TN on June 3, 2023. He was born November 12, 1939. He served in the U.S. Airforce and then worked for IBM where he worked on a project for NASA to help send the first men to the moon. Virgil retired from IBM. He always loved getting together with his friends and playing Blue Grass Music, fishing, hunting and taking care of the Purple Martin every year, they came back to visit. Virgil also enjoyed farming and watching the deer. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Athens. Dad, you are going to be missed greatly, love your son – Barry.
Virgil was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather O’Dean and Luther McDonald. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years Wanda Shadden and one brother Haskel Shadden.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his son Barry Shadden, one grandson Hunter Shadden, one brother Sam Shadden, numerous other extended family members, church family and a host of special friends.
The family would life to say a special thank you to Marshall, Noah and Hope Shaw, Michael & Kelly Saunders and their children and Pastor Bill Henard.
Virgil and Wanda loved their church very much and anyone wanting to remember them are encouraged to make a memorial donation to the Athens First Baptist Church Building Fund.
