Thomas Richard "Tom" Mccabe

March 29, 1947 — June 16, 2019

Thomas Richard McCabe, 72, a longtime resident of Athens, TN passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2019 at Life Care of Athens. He was born on March 29, 1947 in Merced, CA a son of the late Nick & Juliana Bullock McCabe. In his younger years, he spent his time training horses and learning to operate heavy equipment while working for his father’s business. Tom worked as a flight line mechanic for Boeing in Seattle, WA. He also worked for Douglas & Lockheed Aircraft in California and Georgia. Tom taught himself to operate long boom cranes and was later certified as a crane operator. He worked many years as an operator in the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 917 until his retirement in 2006. Tom worked on many projects such as building roads and bridges across the US, the Ocoee Flume Line, expansion projects at Bowater, multiple nuclear plants such as Watts Bar, Fontana, Sequoyah, Hartsville, Kingston Steam and the Savannah River Nuclear Weapons Plant in Aiken, SC. He enjoyed owning and working on his Harley Davidson motorcycles and classic and antique automobiles.
Tom leaves behind to cherish his memory, daughters Kristen Bohannon and her husband Jack and Vivian Thurman and her companion Mitch William, former spouse Virginia McCabe Sneed, grandchildren Mikah Cole, Jin Bohannon, Kayla, George, Tyler and Andrew Brown, siblings Jane McCabe (Dickey Weinkle) from Willits, CA, Margie Beasley, Ron McCabe (Aliceann) both of Spring City, TN, several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of special friends.
A memorial service celebrating his life is planned for Thursday, June 20, 2019 at 7:00 PM in the Athens chapel of Companion Funeral Home located at 400 S White Street in Athens, TN. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 5:00 PM until the 7:00 PM service time at the funeral home.
