Shirley Austin

Shirley Ann Austin, age 86, of Flat Rock, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 2, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on August 15, 1937, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Shirley was a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, known for her love, wisdom, and unwavering support.

Shirley dedicated many years to working at Mountain Oaks Elementary in Ooltewah until her retirement. Her affection for her "kids" made a lasting impact on those she taught.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jakey Wilson and LaRue Hortenberry; her older sister, Betty Long; and daughter-in-law, Roberta Austin.

Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Doug Austin; her son, Larry Austin; her daughter Jami (Scott) Romines; her grandchildren, Lillian (Tyler) McCurry, Victor Austin, and Ashley (Corey Smith) Austin; her great-grandchildren, Liam McCurry, Ashton Smith, Scottie Smith, Dahlia Smith, and Rayna Smith; her siblings, Larry (Donna) Wilson and Peggy Redden; her special friend, Evelyn Bryant; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 2-5 pm on Thursday, August 8, 2024 with a memorial service following at 5:30 pm in the Mack Shelton Parlor at Companion Funeral Home, 2412 Georgetown Road NW, Cleveland, TN. Friends and family are welcome to attend to celebrate Shirley's life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Shirley.
