Sarah Newman

May 5, 1934 — December 2, 2023

Sarah (Sally) Louise Dooly Newman, born May 5, 1934 died peacefully at home on Saturday, December 2, 2023.

Sally is survived by her daughter, Lisa and husband Peter van Maastrigt, grandson James (Jay) Bevington; her son Tommy and wife Amy, granddaughter Charlsey; and her son Beau. She is also survived by her brother Philip Dooly, his wife Deanna; half-sister Nancy and husband Frank Turner; and sister-in-law Margie Larkin Dooly. She is preceded in death by her parents Louise Youngblood Dooly and Weyman Isaac Dooly; her husband, Thomas Pryor Newman; five sisters (Tupper, Noble, Rosalind, Margie, and Warnie); and a brother (Weyman).

Sally was a lifelong resident of Cleveland, Tennessee and a longtime member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she served as Music Director from 1976 to 2005, and as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was known for her assistance in the church kitchen and for her famous pecan pies, which she made for every church member for their birthday. Sally was also a skilled seamstress and clothing designer.

Sally was a 1952 graduate of Bradly High and a 1956 graduate of the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where she also did graduate studies. She and her late husband Tom worked to preserve the pioneer history of East Tennessee on their farm in McDonald. Together they assembled a log cabin village on the property. It is hoped that "The Village at Hawk Creek" will live on as a testament of the pioneer heritage of our area.

Her family is comforted by the fact that Sally lived as she wanted until the end, attending church and family Thanksgiving in recent days.

Visitation will be held at the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church located at 161 2nd Street NE in Cleveland, TN on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, from 4PM to 8PM. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at the church also on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at 2 PM with the Reverend Cliff Hudson Sr. and the Reverend Jennifer Newell officiating.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the children's programs at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Caring Place in Cleveland, Tennessee, or Habitat for Humanity of Cleveland, Tennessee.
