Sandra June Carlyle

March 21, 1937 — July 26, 2023

Sandra June Carlyle passed away on July 26, 2023. She was a native Clevelander and a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church where she served as a Stephen Minister and a chairperson of Congregational Care.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Carlyle, her parents, Haskel and Avis Ownbey Hill, a sister-in-law, Pearl Hill, a nephew, Mark Hill, a son-in-law, Roger Kernell, and the father of her children, James (Jim) R. Jones.


She is survived by four daughters: Linda (Jeff) Norwood of Signal Mountain, Patti (Bill) Walton of Franklin, Lori Shown of Canton, Georgia, and Kari (Kevin) Rhoten of Cottontown. Stepdaughter, Susan Carlyle of Pinole, California and seven Grandchildren, Dr. Will (Amber) Walton, Kate Walton, Dr. Jamison (Randy) Norwood Drake, Stewart (Tory) Norwood, Jonathan Shown, Justin (Savanna) Rhoten, Brooke (Joel) Davis


She is survived by six (soon to be seven) great grandchildren, Charlotte and Lillian Walton, William Drake, Sawyer and Hudson Rhoten, and Parker Davis


She is also survived by one brother, Don Hill of Cleveland and sister, Gail (Toppy) Vann of Atlanta, Georgia. Nieces, Dr. Debra Holp of Mt. Juliet, Dedra (Jim) O’Connor and Shelley Kyle, both of Atlanta, Georgia and one nephew, Tim (Martha) Carlyle of San Martin, California.


She graduated from Charleston High School where she played basketball for Jim Smiddy just as he was beginning his coaching career. She attended Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. She was an executive secretary at Jamison Construction Company in Atlanta, Georgia, and a retired buyer of Bechtel Corporation.


Pallbearers will be Will Walton, Stewart Norwood, Randy Drake, Jonathan Shown, Justin Rhoten, Kent Smith, and Alan Smith. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Danny Hays, Billy Fred Allen, Roger Jenne, and Buck Thorogood.


She was richly blessed with family and friends throughout her life. Her visitation will be held at Broad Street United Methodist Church on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, from 1:00 to 2:00, with the funeral following at 2:00 p.m., with the Reverend Jerry Everly officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with a white dove release.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broad Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 3, Cleveland, Tennessee 37364-0003.
