Obituary

Samuel Roger “Sam” Norman, age 65 and a resident of Cleveland, passed away Monday morning. Sam was born in Elkin, North Carolina. A generous man of good heart and loved by all who knew him, he was of the Baptist faith and a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Cleveland.

Sam was a staunch Georgia fan, a Master Gardener, talented wood worker and gave countless hours of volunteerism to Habitat for Humanity and his church. He graduated from University of Georgia in 1971. He loved history and learning about ways to preserve it. Sam was his happiest when at home cooking for his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Orville Worth Norman and Ersie Blackburn Norman, and is survived by two brothers, Steve Norman and Teddy Norman, and one sister, Kay Enloe, all of Elkin, North Carolina.

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Phyllis Jones Norman; son Wilson and his wife, Sarah of Atlanta, GA; daughters Abby Jones and her husband, Jeff of Spartanburg, SC and Elizabeth Piana and her husband, Mike of Victoria, TX; stepson Dr. Scott Arthur and his wife, Sally of Brentwood, TN; stepdaughter Kellye Renker and her husband, Todd of Knoxville, TN. Sam was the beloved “Papoo” of eleven grandchildren: Ansley Norman, Walt Norman, Anna Jones, Katherine Jones, Ruth Piana, Mary Piana, and Michael Piana; and, Jamison Arthur, Will Arthur, T.J. Renker, and Katie Renker.

The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church located at 1275 Stuart Road NE in Cleveland, TN on Tuesday night, March 11th, 2014 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM.

A celebration of Sam's life is planned for Wednesday, March 12th, 2014 at 1:00 PM at the First Baptist Church with the Reverend Tom Wickes and the Reverend Jim Burleson officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial be made to the American Cancer Society or to Habitat for Humanity in Sam's memory.
