Ruby May Orr-Overmier

May 17, 1926 — July 9, 2022

Ruby May Orr Overmier, 96, passed away at her home-away-from-home in Soddy Daisy, TN on July 9, 2022, ending a long life of love, devotion to family values, and a deep appreciation for Happy Hour. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Frederick Wayne Overmier. They met at a USO dance during WWII, and married after the war. Together they raised 6 amazing children, who blessed them with 8 beautiful grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Ruby was born on the kitchen table of the family home on Eagle Street in New Orleans. Her parents were Thomas P. Orr Sr and Ruby Ferris Orr. She was the youngest, her siblings Thomas P. Orr Jr, Dorothy Orr Flick, and Vivian Orr Alfred also preceded her in death.

Ruby attended Eleanor McMain High School and spent most of her career as a legal secretary. She and Fred built their own home in Metairie LA before they married, and added on to it as the family continued to grow. She lived there until Hurricane Ida displaced her to Tennessee, never dreaming she would not return. Ruby was a founding member of St. Christopher the Martyr Catholic Church. She and Fred were devoted members of the Metairie Senior Center, the Gerard Golden Age Club, the Twirling Pairs Round Dance Club, and the Red Hats Society. Ruby served as the secretary of the Ladies’ Altar Society at St. Christopher, Troop Leader for Girl Scout Troop #703, and on the parents’ clubs at Chapelle, Rummel, and Cabrini High Schools. Ruby was well-loved, friendly, and had a wicked sense of humor. She loved to garden, play the organ, and talk to the birds and the squirrels. She and Fred loved to dress up in costumes, especially if there was a contest to be won.

Ruby leaves behind 6 children: Kerry O. Britton (Bruce), Kathleen O. Landry (Ernie), Stephen Overmier (Michael Hutchins), Ann O. Cinquemano (Larry), John Overmier (Jocelyn), and Jaime O. Mixon (Leslie). Her 8 grandchildren are: Andrew Britton, Owen Britton, Patrick Landry, Kristen Felder, Michael Cinquemano, Daniel Cinquemano, Kimberly Overmier, and Laurel Mixon. Her 9 great grandchildren are: Scarlett Britton, Alexandra Britton, Joseph Landry, Leigha Landry, Madisyn Cinquemano, Emerson Felder, Griffin Felder, Bodin Cinquemano, and Landyn Cinquemano. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Her family deeply hopes that her kindness, goodness, and sense of humor have rubbed off on them!

A Memorial Mass will be held at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Soddy Daisy TN on Saturday, July 23 at 11 am with a luncheon to follow. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Christopher the Martyr Catholic Church in Metairie, LA on Saturday, August 20, at noon. Visitation will be at the church from 10 am to noon, and a reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Interment will be at Garden of Memories following the funeral.

Many thanks to Hearth Hospice of Chattanooga and N. Georgia, and to Serenity Hospice of New Orleans, for their wonderful care! Companions Funeral Home of Cleveland TN is handling the arrangements.
