Ed Hunley, 75, passed away at his home in Cleveland, TN on Monday, November 6, 2023. He was born in Knoxville, TN to the late Ralph and Mary Catherine Brown Hunley.
He was a graduate of Central High School in Knoxville, class of 1966. He received his BA degree in Music from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. As a pianist he was chosen to accompany the UT Singers on a trip to Venezuela where they performed at several famous sites. Ed was blessed with an extraordinary tenor voice and was encouraged to train for the Metropolitan Opera under the direction of Dr. Mellos in Florida; but, after 1 year of intense training, he developed a severe throat condition and was not able to continue. Music was always his 1st love and he started playing as guest pianist and organist at many churches in Knoxville and Cleveland. His favorite, of course, was being asked to play the large pipe organs around the area.
He received his certification in Radiologic Technology at UTK. He was employed in the X-Ray Department at UT Hospital, Bradley Memorial Hospital and Athens Regional Hospital, where he retired.
Ed was a great "Chef" taking classes and practicing on family. He also helped cook meals at the Emmaus Walk for several years where he made many special friends.
After retirement, he learned to quilt and provided family and friends with fabulous quilts. Some of his designs were ribbon winners at local quilt shows. Over the years, he has donated more than 30 quilts to The Caring Place and many churches and rescue missions. He was a very kind and generous person.
He leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Brenda Hunley.
A remembrance of his life will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Thursday, November 16, 2023. The family will receive friends at 2:30 in the Parish Hall with the service following in the Church at 3:00.
You are invited to share a personal memory of Ed or your condolences with his family at his online memorial located at www.companionfunerals.com. Companion Funeral Home of Cleveland and the Cody family are honored to assist the family with these arrangements.
