Robert "Bobby" V. Godfrey

May 19, 1934 — April 16, 2018

Robert “Bobby” V. Godfrey, 83, died Monday, April 16, 2018, while undergoing treatment at a local medical facility. He was a lifelong resident of the Cleveland community having been educated in the Bradley County School system. He attended Charleston High School and was an avid sportsman and played basketball under the tutelage of Coach Jim Smiddy. He also played baseball with the local Cleveland Independent teams during the 1950’s and subsequently signed to play professionally with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization for a brief stint. Bob served his country in the United States Army in Korea. His most admirable trait was his strong Christian faith which he demonstrated daily through his kind and genuine love for people.
He was preceded in death by his faithful and devoted parents, Wilbur and Ethel Godfrey. Survivors include his brothers, I. W. Godfrey, Jr. and wife, Beverly, and Gary Godfrey and wife, Margaret. Most significant survivors are two precious nieces, Margaret and Melissa. Equally significant and very special survivors are great nieces, Alexa and Alayna and great nephew, William. Other survivors include cousins James Lloyd Moss and his wife, Martha G. Moss of Canton, N. C., and their children David and Jamie.
A private celebration of his life was held by his immediate family. The family expresses sincere thanks and appreciation to all of the local medical professionals and staffs who shared their expertise in attending to Bob’s medical needs as well as his many friends in the Cleveland and Charleston communities who have expressed condolences. In lieu of flowers the family requests any memorials be made to your favorite church or charitable organization. Companion Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements and interment was in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
