Richard James "Shorty" Ferguson
May 30, 1942 - May 27, 2025
Richard James Ferguson, affectionately known to all as "Shorty," passed away peacefully at his home in Decatur, Tennessee. Born on May 30, 1942, in Newburgh, New York, Shorty may have been small in stature, but he had a giant personality that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
Shorty is survived by his devoted wife, Donna Coddington Ferguson, his six children, and two stepchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy of laughter, love, and resilience.
He dedicated many years of service as the head custodian in the Wallkill, New York school system. After retirement, he continued working as a truck driver, always staying active and engaged. A true automotive enthusiast, Shorty had a deep passion for anything with wheels and an engine-especially antique cars. He found great joy in restoring them and sharing that passion with others.
After fully retiring, Shorty and Donna relocated to Tennessee, where he became an active member of the Rough Riders Car Club. There, he continued to make new friends and pursue his love for classic cars.
Shorty was known for his quick wit and infectious sense of humor. He loved a good joke, but even more, he loved making others laugh. To know him was to be welcomed with a smile and a story-he truly never met a stranger.
During the holiday season, Shorty brought joy to countless children as a beloved Santa Claus. It didn't take much to be in costume, with his real white beard, red cheeks and a round belly. He embodied the spirit of Christmas, delighting young hearts and spreading cheer wherever he went.
He was deeply loved and will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
