Obituary
Rev. Marvin Hughes, Jr., 86, known by family and friends as "Junior", was welcomed into the arms of his Savior on January 19, 2015, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born the oldest of nine children to Marvin and Georgia Hughes on February 3, 1928.
He dedicated his life to serving the Lord and led many to meet their Savior. If you knew Junior, then you knew the fruit of the spirit living inside of him, for he exuded love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
We, as a family, were blessed to have had him in our life to teach us about love, commitment, determination and perseverance. He was married to Sis, the love of his life, for 63 years. He became disabled from an early age with back problems and he had a stroke in 2007 which confined him to a wheelchair, but he was determined to recover from both of those afflictions so that he could enjoy spending time with his precious children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They brought so much joy into his life that his blue eyes sparkled every time he got to see them. He was quick-witted and always full of joy, singing songs and reciting poems to make us all laugh. He loved the outdoors and passed on that love in the form of horseback riding, hunting and fishing. He will be missed here with us, but we celebrate his healing and his reunion with Sis in Heaven with the Lord, where we know he heard these words, "Well done, good and faithful servant!"
Junior was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Frances "Sis" Hughes; his parents, Marvin Hughes, Sr. and Georgia Kington Hughes; one brother, Cletus Hughes; and one sister, Frances Gammill. He is survived by two brothers: Rev. James "Buck" Hughes and Julius Hughes of Cleveland; four sisters: Beatrice Hickman of Ohio, Juanita Fritz of Illinois, Joyce Creaseman of Cleveland, and Wilma Oliver of Harrison; three children Dennis Hughes and wife Linda of Sparta, TN, Sieglinda Sherrill and husband Lester of Cleveland and Maurice "Reece" Hughes and wife Tonya of Cleveland; loving grandchildren: Tracy Hughes, Travis Hughes, Holly Hughes-Barnes, John Hartness, Terina Walker, Chanda Hughes, Brooklyn Hughes and Brandon Hughes; and ten precious great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 22 at Mt. Olive Church of God on Harrison Pike. A celebration of his life will be held at 7:00 p.m. following the visitation with Pastor Gary Sears officiating. Interment will be conducted on Friday, January 23 in the Mt. Olive COG cemetery at noon.
