Randy Rae Heafner, 56, of Athens, TN, left this life on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 after a lengthy illness. Randy was born on February 13, 1963 in Norfolk, VA to Harry Eller Heafner and Sallie Roberson Heafner. He was a Boy Scout and attained both the prestigious Order of the Arrow and the highest honor of Eagle Scout. He graduated High School in 1981 from Hallie Turner Private School in Columbus, GA and graduated from Louisburg College, Louisburg, NC in 1984 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business. After graduation Randy began a successful career in Medical Surgical Supply sales with Owens and Minor and later pursued a rewarding career in Log Home sales and management.
Randy was a kind and compassionate man with a wonderfully quirky sense of humor. He had a way of making people feel at ease and secure around him. He was an incredible husband and best friend, as well as a devoted and loving father. Randy had several hobbies, including keeping one of the best-looking yards in Athens (according to his neighbors) and coin collecting. He was a loyal and active citizen and was very passionate about every board he volunteered to serve upon to help better the City of Athens. As for his Board appointment history, he served on three very important technical boards, that require a special housing and building background to qualify for each. Randy’s passion for building and preservation made him a perfect candidate and fit to ensure these Boards had the best people making decisions to help move the city forward. He served on the Athens Historic Preservation Commission from September 2006 to October 2017. He was instrumental in the creation of the first Historic District in Athens, TN, something he was quite proud of. The Board of Zoning Appeals from August 2012 to present and The Board of Adjustment and Appeals from June 2008 to present.
Randy is survived by his wife, Elisabeth Thorpe; his sons Zachary Eller Heafner and Jonah Garrett Smith; his daughter Samantha Elisabeth Smith; His sister Debra Heafner Sargent and Husband John Sargent; brother Steve Heafner and wife Susan Heafner; niece Emily Sargent Welch and husband Adam Welch; Niece Erin Sargent Roberts and husband John Roberts, great-nephews Spencer Paul Jackson, John Harden Roberts, Grayson James Roberts, and Corey William Heafner; great-niece Zoe Elizabeth Heafner as well as many beloved friends.
