Oletta (Leta) Summerour Jones

December 12, 1937 — May 9, 2024

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Oletta (Leta) Summerour Jones on May 9,2024. She was born on December 12, 1937, in Dawsonville, GA, to the late Henry Clay and Irma Belle Summerour. She peacefully left us at the age of 86 in Ooltewah, TN, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication.

She is preceded in death by her brothers, William Franklin, John L., Clay, and Douglas Summerour, and her sisters, Juanita Woods, Susie Coleman, and Mary Carol Crymes. She is survived by her son Samuel (Leslie) Jones, grandchildren Quinten, Lucas, and Jacob, her sister Barbara Jean (Ted) Huffstetler, brother Russell (Cheryl) Summerour, sister-in-law Renae Summerour, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Leta, a loving and tender-hearted individual, was known for her infectious laughter and ability to converse with anyone. She was also described as stubborn as a mule and deeply believed in the importance of family. She was a proud graduate of Dawson County High School. After attending Young Harris College, she worked in Atlanta and had memorable times living with friends and family before she met and married Sam Jones, a student at Georgia Tech. She ensured he graduated, and after he obtained a job at US Steel, they moved near Birmingham, Alabama, where she spent most of her life. She devoted much energy and love to raising her child, Samuel O. Jones, IV. Leta also spent 35 years working at the Shades Valley YMCA, often doing the work of 3 or 4 people (she frequently joked). In her later years, she moved to Chattanooga, TN, to keep a close eye on her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on May 16, 2024, at 1 pm. at Chestatee Worship Center, 2057 Dawson Forest Road East, Dawsonville, GA 30534.

Leta wished to be cremated, and her remains will be at Dawsonville City Cemetery.
