Maxine Byerley Moore, a resident of Cleveland, went to her eternal home Friday evening, December 9. 2016. Her faith, in Christ alone, became sight.
A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Mrs. Moore was born to Charles and Geneva Goodman Byerley on June 23, 1941. She was a graduate of Young High School and received her undergraduate and Master’s degrees from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She moved to Cleveland in 1963 to work with the Bradley County Extension Service where she was well known for her work as an Extension Agent. She made many lifelong impacts on young 4-Hers as she taught across the county.
In 1972, she married a young farmer by the name of John Moore. As they began life together, she resigned from 4-H work, but continued to teach children and youth for many years. Mrs. Moore helped begin a graded children’s choir at Bellefounte Baptist Church and led children, youth, and adult choirs for over 20 years. She also taught youth and children’s Sunday School for many years at her local church. She loved being a part of the body of Christ and was a fervent prayer warrior. She was a member of Candies Creek Baptist Church.
As a farmer’s wife, she was very active in the Bradley County Farm Bureau where she served on the Board of Directors for 40 years. She was influential in her work with Farm Bureau Women as she taught youngsters about the importance of agriculture through a program named, Ag in the Classroom. She was Farm Bureau Women’s Chairperson for many years and served on various committees including the State Resolution Committee. Mrs. Moore also helped organize Food Check Out Day and the collection of cola tabs to help benefit Ronald McDonald houses across the state. For all her efforts to promote agriculture, she was inducted in to the Bradley County Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2004 and later received the Farm Bureau’s Distinguished Service Award for Tennessee in 2013.
Maxine was also a vivacious member of the Rambling Rose Red Hat Society here in Cleveland.
She was preceded in death by her parents Mr. Charles M. Byerley and Geneva Goodman Byerley.
Survivors include her dedicated husband of 44 years, John M. Moore, three children and their spouses, John Mark and Laura Moore, Mary-Margaret and Jeremy Colloms, Matthew and Jennifer Moore, and six grandchildren.
Other survivors include her brother and his spouse Charles and Michelle Byerley of Mesa, Arizona.
Receiving of friends will be held at Candies Creek Baptist Church from 4:00-8:00 on Tuesday evening. The Memorial Service will be Wednesday morning at 11:00 also at Candies Creek Baptist Church. The internment is to follow at New Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. Stan Gibson, Matthew Moore, and Jay McCluskey will be officiating. Pallbearers will include Jack Moore, Jim Moore, Tommy Haun, Jack Sanders, Dennis Tweed, and Tom Jolley. Honorary Pall bearers will include Gary Betchel, Jerry Suites, Danny Logan, “The Way” Sunday School class of Candies Creek Baptist Church, and Mrs. Moore’s friends of the Red Hat Society.
