Obituary
Mary Frances Hughes, 81, affectionately known by family and friends as “Sis”, was welcomed into the arms of her loving Savior on May 8, 2014 after a short illness.
She was born the oldest of five children to Joe and Martha Jones on August 18th, 1932. She was a member of the Old Fashioned Gospel Tabernacle PCOG and had close connections to Mt. Olive COG.
She was filled with the joy of the Lord and loved to have fun and share that love with others. She was an avid yard sale shopper, always on a quest to find the best antiques and the greatest toys for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
If yard sales were her first passion, then food was her second. She loved to grow it, planting a garden every year (often planting an extra row of okra if you weren’t watching). She loved to cook it, and could feed a multitude, and she loved to eat it, sweets being her favorite. Food became a running theme throughout Sis’s life. She ran the Snack Shop at Lee College for several years in the 1970s and was so loved by the students that they often begged to come home with her. She also cooked and served food at the Dog and Suds restaurant and Prospect grocery where she gained even more love from the Prospect community. Her church family couldn’t wait to taste her famous chicken and dumplings each time they had a dinner and she would feed anyone if they were hungry.
She raised her kids to love the Lord and she showed that love in everything that she did. She had a life well-lived and we are all blessed to have been a part of it.
Mary Frances was preceeded in death by her parents Joe and Martha Jones and one infant sister, Mary Joe Jones. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Marvin Hughes, Jr.; two brothers: Bobby Jones and wife Robbie of Cleveland, and Johnnie Jones and wife Linda of Detroit, Michigan; one sister: Carrie Dean Vaughn and husband Jack of Cleveland; three children: Dennis Hughes and wife Linda of Sparta, TN, Sieglinda Sherrill and husband Lester of Cleveland and Maurice “Reece” Hughes and wife Tonya of Cleveland; loving grandchildren: Tracy Hughes, Travis Hughes, Holly
Hughes-Barnes, John Hartness, Terina Hartness, Chanda Hughes, Brooklyn Hughes and Brandon Hughes; and ten precious great-grandchildren.
