Mary Elizabeth Phillips

January 27, 1923 — December 15, 2016

Mary Elizabeth Brackett Phillips, 93, of Cleveland, passed away on Thursday, December 15, 2016. She was born January 27, 1923 in Charleston, TN. After graduating from Charleston High School in 1941, she moved to Cleveland and worked as an airplane riveter during WWII and later as a retail clerk at Miller’s and Parks-Belk Dept. Stores. She married her husband Bill on July 19, 1947 and then went on to have three children. She worked several years as a receptionist at a local dentist office but her most memorable job was part owner and owner & operator of the Bradley Snack Shop. She enjoyed the antics of the High School kids for many years.
She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church and the Gleaners Sunday School Class. She was an avid Bridge player. Mary loved traveling and new adventures, but her greatest love was her grandchildren. She was proud to be known as Nana to them and many of their friends as well.
She was the daughter of Henry Harrison Brackett & Jessie Christina (Pierce) Brackett. Granddaughter of William & Eliza Jane (Gilbreath) Brackett and Hamilton Horace & Elizabeth Matilda (Witt) Pierce.
She was preceded in death by her husband William Roby Phillips, Jr.; son, Allen Douglas Phillips; brother, Henry Hamilton Brackett, her parents and grandparents.
She is survived by her son, William Roby (Sheryl) Phillips III; daughter Victoria Lynn Phillips (John) McIntosh; sister, Anna Christine Brackett Simpson; nephews, Richard, David, and Kevin Simpson; her beloved grandchildren: Amy Elizabeth McIntosh (Scott) Carter, Dana Joan McIntosh (Brian) Storey, Brent John McIntosh, Kelly Christina McIntosh (Kyle) Stokes, Bethany Victoria McIntosh, Scott Christian (Jessica) Phillips, Benjamin Charles (Tiffany) Phillips, and Michelle Jane (Steve) Watts. She was also a proud great-grandmother of Paige Carter, Avalynn & Curtis Phillips, Charlie & Oliver Phillips, Isabella Bon Hotel, and soon to be born, Carson & Connor Storey.
In honor of her wishes, there will be no formal services. She will be laid to rest in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, in Cleveland, Tennessee. As she would have wanted, we will continue our family holiday traditions and celebrate her life and memory as we gather together.
