Mark G. Mitchell's "one day" came on Saturday, July 27, 2024, when he sat down on his couch in his home, took off his hat and entered eternity. It was an unexpected day of grief for those who knew and loved Mark. For him, it was the day his faith became sight and his hope realized. On days when Mark would reminisce about growing up and share memories of loved ones gone before him, he would always end the conversation with "Remember this. One day, we will get to see them again."
Mark was 59 years old and a resident of Ft. Oglethorpe, GA. He was a native of Chattanooga,TN and was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Joyce Mitchell, his oldest brother"Ricky" Mitchell, his maternal and paternal grandparents, two cousins, and aunts and uncles (all from the Chattanooga/North Georgia area. He is survived by three sisters, Shelley (Homer)Shavers, Tanya (Ray) Goodpasture (his twin), Angela Durham, two brothers, Rodney (Shelly)Mitchell, Timothy Mitchell and many nieces, nephews, cousins and aunts and uncles.
Mark attended Lakeview Fort Oglethorpe High School (class of 1982). He learned the trade of roofing and construction from his father and spent many of his working years in that field.
Mark had a love for learning, a love of life, America, family and beauty found in nature. His positive attitude amidst challenging and difficult circumstances inspired others. He would oftensay, "If you're not trying, you're dying." He loved passionately, gave generously and celebrated joyfully.
Mark's greatest love and affection were for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. If you saw him atthe grocery store or sitting on his front porch, chances are you would also see him in one of hisJesus hats. His nephew, Mitchell Goodpasture, described Mark's relationship with Christ this way:
"He was the perfect example of the Gospel and how God loves us and remains in a relationship with us, regardless of where we are in life and I needed that reminder in my life. I saw Jesus in Mark more than I see it in most people and I'll always be thankful for that example he showed, and the love he had for our family."
He is deeply missed today and will be in the days to come.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Mark on August 17, 2024 at New Haven Fellowship Church, 906 Mission Ridge Road, Rossville, GA with Stacey Powell (cousin) officiating. The service will be held at 12:00 Noon, followed by a private family graveside at Lakewood Memory Gardens South, 325 Greens Lake Road, Rossville, GA.
