Lyle B. Gassman, 84, of Birchwood, TN, died peacefully in his sleep after a brief illness on Thursday, April 25, 2019. Lyle was born on October 17, 1934, in Beulah, MI, to Bion and Caroline Merillat Gassman. After graduating from Benzonia High School he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in Korea during the Korean War. Lyle retired from Southland Corporation where he had advanced his career from over-the-road trucker to a Safety Supervisor. He had resided in Michigan, Florida, Georgia, Texas and then retired in Tennessee because he loved this area. Lyle was a member of the Calhoun United Methodist Church where he served on their board. He was a long-time participant in the Senior Olympics at both the local and national level where he competed in bowling, shuffleboard, track, and other events.
Lyle is survived by his two daughters, Brenda (Michael) Post of New York, and Cindy Laney of Georgia. In addition, he is survived by four grandsons, Daniel Post of New York, Andrew Post of Alaska, Ryan Laney of Georgia and Brandon Laney of Alabama, and two great-grandchildren, Isabella and Jacob Post of New York.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at the Calhoun United Methodist Church, 820 Hwy 163, Calhoun, TN on May 11 at 2:00 PM. A private family service will be held later this summer in Beulah, Michigan.
