Kevin Leon Scoggins, 47, a lifelong resident of Cleveland, TN walked into the arms of Jesus on Saturday morning, September 10th, 2016. He was born on May 15, 1969 to Leon “Whick” and Mary Glenda Scoggins. Kevin attended Mt. Olive Church of God. Kevin loved being outdoors and all things “Relentless.” He was an extreme sportsman, spending any spare time hunting, mountain biking, kayaking, and spending time with God’s creations. Kevin was also a very gifted woodworker, always building something new, whether it was for “Slabtown Art” or just for family and friends. Kevin also found joy in giving back to others as he founded “Relentless Outdoors”, the “Kevin Scoggins’s Life Inspiration Award” at Hopewell Elementary School, he performed many walks, races, and bike rides for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and he was the recipient of the American Cancer Society’s 2015 Life Inspiration Award. During his 100 rounds of chemo therapy, Kevin participated in a 100 mile mountain bike race and 100 mile road bike race for Habitat for Humanity. Kevin was a fighter until the day he passed away, never giving up and always being “Relentless.”
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Clyde James and Edith Scoggins; maternal grandparents Glen “Red” and Mable Collins McCarter and step grandmother Flossie “Tommie” McCarter, cousin Jimmy Scoggins and uncle Billy Scoggins.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 26 years, Leisa Phillips Scoggins; son Zackary Kevin Leon Scoggins; father Leon “Whick” Scoggins; mother Mary Glenda Scoggins; sister Tammy Scoggins Leatherwood (Bill); mother in law Judy Owenby Phillips; brother in law Jacen Phillips (Melissa Posey Phillips); special niece Amber “Booger” Olinger (Todd), nephews Michael Tyler Dooley (Mandy), Sammy Bain, and Jaxen Phillips; special great nephews Aiden Olinger and Ian Dooley; great niece Zoe Dooley. In addition to these, he leaves behind his aunts Sue McCarter, Shirley Carr (Donnie) and Faye Longley (Fred), uncle Joe Collins (Julia), cousins Danny Bonner (Karen), Jr. Scoggins (Brenda), David Watson, Lisa Cross (Ricky) and Greg Carr, special friends Wayne Radcliff, Ross Tarver, Rostin Bergen, Joey Holder, Doug Coulter, David Coulter and Brad Cobb, numerous extended family members and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday morning, September 14th, 2016 at 11:00 AM Mt. Olive Church of God with Pastor Todd Collins and Pastor Gary Sears officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday afternoon from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the church’s main sanctuary. Interment will follow the service at Earl’s Cemetery with Tyler Dooley, Todd Olinger, Jason Caldwell, Jimmy Blankenship, Tim Phipps and Bob Tarver serving as pallbearers.
The family would like to say a special “Thank You” to Ryan Kalman for providing his life saving stem cells, Dr. Davey Daniel, nurses and entire staff of Tennessee Oncology and the Angels of 4 East of Memorial Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society or donate lifesaving blood and platelets to Blood Assurance in memory of Kevin Scoggins.
