John Marvin Ross, 79, of Cleveland, TN passed away at his home on Monday, September 24, 2012. John was the son of the late Aubie and Mary Ross. John grew up in Cleveland and after moving away for some time, he and Jean have spent the past forty years as a Cleveland residents. He was of the Baptist faith and an active member of First Baptist Church where he served as a volunteer on the greeting team. John was a faithful employee of Bell South Telephone Company for 35 years here in Cleveland. John was a member of the Black Fox Ruritan Club, American Red Cross, the Public Service Unit with the Cleveland Police Department, and a member of the Outpost Harry Survivors, where he was awarded the Silver Star. John also volunteered at Bradley Memorial Hospital helping serve and care for patients. In addition to his tremendous volunteer work, John was known for his love of golf. He was an avid golfer who frequently played every course in Bradley County, loving the men he played with at each one. However, John had a special place in his heart for his friends at Chatata Valley for how they helped care for John. Above all the things John is known for, he will forever be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle.
In addition to his mother and father, John is preceded in death by three sisters: Thelma Sherlin, Francis Sloan, and Laura Clemmons and one brother: Lester Ross. John leaves behind to cherish his memory: his wife of 58 years, Jean Ross; three daughters: Karen Bruce ( John) of Knoxville; Betsy Sims (Dr. Stephen Sims) of Chattanooga; Melissa Thomas of Conway, AR; two sisters: Joyce Goggins and Margaret Grant both of Ringgold, GA; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren and 15 nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at First Baptist Church located at 1275 Stuart RD, Cleveland, TN 37312 on Thursday September 27th from 10:00am-12:00pm. The funeral service will follow at 12:00pm at the church. Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery. Steven Brooks, Dr. John Lee, Dillon Sims, Michael Jubin, and Joe Thomas will serve as pallbearers. The Sunday School class at First Baptist taught by T. Roy Jones will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
