John Elmer Vaughan, 89, of Chattanooga, passed away Nov. 29. He passed away at home with family. John was born October 3, 1930 in Prestonsburg, KY, to David and Orbie Vaughan, he was the second of four sons.
John graduated with a degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Kentucky. As an Air Force ROTC student, he enlisted in the Airforce, and began officer training in Moultrie, GA, followed by jet training in Laredo, TX. He graduated with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton Ohio. John served in the Air Force thru 1962 when he retired from the Air Force and began a civil career as an engineer for the Aeronautical Systems Division at Wright-Patterson working in procurement of airplanes for the Air Force. He was the Air Frame Manager on the multi-year design & construction of the C-5A cargo plane.
John is survived by his best friend and wife of 67 years, Betty Layne Vaughan, a daughter Vicki Page, a son David Vaughan, two grandsons, Matthew Page and John Morgan Page and his wife Kristen, and Alfred Rosario.
A service for John will be Thursday at 1pm at the Tyner United Methodists Church 6805 Standifer Gap Road Chattanooga 37421. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Air Force Museum Foundation, Inc. P.O. Box 1903, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio 45433.
