John “Bert” Corbin, 89, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Friday evening, June 12, 2020. Our family lost a very loving Husband, Father, Father-in-law, Grandfather, Great-Grandpa, Man of God, and an American Naval Hero. John was born on November 27, 1930 in Grove City, PA. He will be remembered as a loving, devoted, hard-working, patriotic family man who was well-liked by anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him. He was a strong and dedicated Christian man who honorably and heroically served his country as a gunner’s mate who saw significant combat action aboard the USS JAMES C. OWENS (DD-776) in the Korean War.
He is preceded in death by his parents Leonard H. Corbin and Eunice L. Hedglin Corbin, two brothers and one sister.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 69 years, Phyllis (McDonald) Corbin and his children, John (Lynn) Corbin of Lordstown , OH; Brenda (Richard) Duffett of Canfield, OH; Gerre (Nancy) Corbin of Cortland, OH; and Patricia (Michael) Morningstar of Cleveland, TN. He leaves a great legacy in his 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren-James Glidewell; Heather (Tim) Hogg; Matthew (Bethany) Glidewell; Jessica (Kevin) Myers; Chelsea (Mike) Drotar; Stephanie (Dalton) Caldwell; Hannah (Jared) Elledge; Rachel Corbin, and Gerre T. Corbin II; and his great grandchildren Jake Hogg, Leah Pounds, Kyle Hogg, Sean Myers, Peyton Drotar, Isabella Glidewell, Landry and Amelia Drotar, Noah Glidewell, Adalyn Elledge and Emmett Caldwell.
The family is planning a graveside service on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at 1:00 PM in the Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Michael Cawood officiating. There will be a view from 12:30 – 1:00 PM at the cemetery for those wishing to pay their final respects. The 1:00 PM service will be live streamed on his memorial webpage and the funeral home Facebook page as well and will conclude with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to either Macedonia Baptist Church or Hospice of Chattanooga in John’s memory.
