James William Evans Sr., age 90, of Cleveland, TN, passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2016. He was a member of Westwood Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James H. and Ines Woodfin Evans.
He was born October 9th, 1925 in Pisgah, Alabama. He grew up in many of the small communities surrounding Fort Payne, Ala. He graduated from DeKalb County High School in 1943 and began his career as a skilled lineman. In 1945 he volunteered for the United States Army and proudly served his country during WWII. While stationed in Leghorn, Italy, he became one of the youngest Staff Sargent in the Quarter Master Packing Corps. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
After taking a job with TVA, he moved his family to Cleveland, Tennessee in 1965. He retired from TVA after a 33 year career. After retirement, he began to enjoy the things he had set aside while providing for his family; fishing, hunting, and wood working. He was a true “jack of all trades” and could fix or build almost anything. He was a true patriot and a hard worker, but, most of all, he was a loving and devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joyce L. Evans, of Cleveland. His daughter, Brook Evans, of Cleveland, Four sons, Jim Evans (Margaret) of Knoxville. Dane Evans, of Cleveland, Eric Evans, of Cleveland. David Evans (Jeannette) of Chicago, Illinois.
He also leaves to cherish his memory, his grandchildren; Shane Ball, Joanna Ball, Erin Evans, Miles Evans, Catherine Wattenbarger (Marc), Emily Evans, Allison Evans, Jean Marie Evans and Martha Sandvig (David), one great granddaughter, Mia Evans, one sister, Johnnie Stane, and one niece Gay (Billy) Allen
The remembrance of life service will be held at Westwood Baptist Church on Monday, February 1st, 2016 at 4:00 PM with the Reverend Nolan Phillips officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until the 4:00 PM service time.
A private burial with full military honors will be held at the Chattanooga National Cemetery w on Tuesday February 2nd, 2016.
In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made to Westwood Baptist Church or the Salvation Army in James’s memory.
