James Roy Ammons

December 10, 1938 — June 4, 2017

James Roy Ammons, 78, of Etowah, TN passed away on Sunday, June 4th, 2017 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on December 10, 1938 in the Liberty Hill Community of McMinn County. He was the son of the late John L. and Nellie Adams Ammons. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Williams Ray and David Choice Ammons.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Vaughn Ammons, his children, James, Bill and his wife Kim, Jason and his wife Noriko, Brenda, Lisa, and Barbara Ammons, his grandchildren, Jacob and Eli Coggins, Luke Ammons, and Julia Ammons. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Ammons and wife Jean, and sister Judy Faye Stiles, several nieces and nephews.
He served four years active duty in the United States Air Force, retired Y-12 at Oak Ridge and had a lifelong love of airplanes and motorcycles. He also enjoyed teasing and having ice cream and popsicles with his grandchildren.
The family would like to thank hospice, especially Carrie, Melissa, Bob, Mike and April. You help our family very much and will never be forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorial donations be made in James’s memory to either St. Joseph’s Indian School P. O. Box 300, Chamberlain, SD 57326-0300 or Christian Appalachian Project 485 Ponderosa Drive P. O. Box 1768 Paintsville, KY 41240.
There will be no formal visitation or services in consideration of his wishes.
