James (Jim) Rolland Minor passed away on February 22, 2025 at age 89. He was born in Sulligent, Alabama to Louise Dove Minor and Noah Richard Minor on December 31, 1935. He was the oldest of four children including Mary Minor Woods, Ann Minor White and Jerry Richard Minor. At age 16, he began his first career as a pastor in the North Alabama Conference of the Methodist Church. After entering Athens College in Alabama at 17, he began serving parishes in several towns in north Alabama. Afterward, he became a district executive with the Boy Scouts of America.
His next career began as a purchasing agent with Cornelius in Scottsboro, Alabama. During this time, he volunteered as a treasurer for the United Way. He then worked in purchasing for Fedders in Decatur, Alabama followed by Magic Chef/Maytag in Cleveland Tennessee, where he retired as the international procurement director. In this capacity, he traveled the world. His final career was as founder of IBS, Inc., an international buying and consulting business.
He was a certified Master Gardener and shared his knowledge of native plants as a volunteer at the Ocoee Whitewater Center in the Cherokee National Forest. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #1944 and a member of the American Camellia Society where he hybridized species and wrote articles. James also served as the finance chair for the construction of First United Methodist Church as well as the fundraising chair for the handbell choir in Cleveland, Tennessee.
He enjoyed researching ancestry, golfing, fishing, photography, birding, gardening and spending time with his beloved rescue dog, Lucky Lady.
James is survived by Patricia Mitchell Minor, wife of 69 years; Angela Minor, daughter, and Debra Honeycutt, daughter-in-law; Richard Byron Minor, son, and Elizabeth Minor, daughter-in-law; Ashlyn Torbett and JJ Torbett, grandchildren; Nathon Minor, grandson, and Kim Minor; Sahara Minor and Nadia Minor, great-grandchildren; Ann Minor White, sister and Kenneth White, brother-in-law; Jerry Richard Minor, brother; and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be a family graveside service at Lee Cemetery. The memorial service will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
