James Houston McLain, 85, of Cleveland, Tennessee passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2023 surrounded by his family. As a lifelong resident of Cleveland, he was an active member of the community for most of his life. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially with his family on the Hiwassee River. His greatest joy came from traveling endless miles to support his grandchildren in their activities. James was a very loving father and grandfather.
He held many titles throughout his life including, Past President and Chairman of the Board, Merchants Bank of Cleveland, Tennessee National Guard, Platoon Sergeant and Color Guard, Past President and Board Member, Sertoma of Cleveland, Past Treasurer and Board Member, Bradley/Polk Speech and Hearing Center March of Dimes, Past President, Junior Achievement, Past Board Member, Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland, Past Treasurer, Central City Action Association, Past Vice President and Board Member, Cleveland/Bradley Chamber of Commerce, Past Board Member, YMCA of Cleveland, Past Board Member, United Way of Cleveland/Bradley County, Past Board Member, Polk County Chamber of Commerce Charter Member of Benjamin Cleveland Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution, and Charter Member and Deacon, Northside Presbyterian Church.
James was preceded in death by his father, James Edgar McLain; mother, Emma Cecil Griffith McLain; sister, Edna McLain Wiefering all of Cleveland, Tennessee.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his children, Kelley Massey (Mike) of Cleveland, Mark McLain of Chattanooga, Jamie Bankston (Jeff) of Cleveland; his grandchildren, Houston McLain of Chattanooga, Austin Massey of Cleveland, Breana Bankston of Cleveland, Tyler Massey of Cleveland, Jackson McLain of Chattanooga, Marina Bankston of Cleveland, Gus Covert of Chattanooga; and his cousin, Tommy McLain; along with a host of extended family and friends.
A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, August 6, 2023 at Prospect United Presbyterian Church at 4:00 pm with Reverend Hunter McLain officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm prior to the service.
