James Welch Hawkins, age 81 of Cleveland, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on March 19, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 30, 1943 in South Charleston, West Virginia to Nathan and Lula Hawkins, Jim lived a life marked by dedication, courage, and unwavering love for his family and country.
Jim was an all-star athlete in high school, lettering in football, baseball, basketball, and track. He received a full scholarship to play for West Virginia University, and was nicknamed "Hawk" and "82" by his teammates.
As a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Jim served honorably during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he returned home to build a life centered around his family and community. He worked as a salesman for McJunkin Corporation for 40 years, where his strong work ethic and kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Jim was a devoted husband to Cherie, with whom he shared 51 years of marriage. When they met, it was love at first sight. They were married a year later with "first sight" engraved in their wedding bands. Jim was a loving father to his children, Mark (Sallie) Trammell, Pat (Shelly) Trammell, Scott Trammell, and Amy (Reggie) Denham. His greatest joy came from being "Big Daddy" to his 5 grandchildren, Wesley, Maclaine (Austen), Isabel (Ben), Mallory (Joe), and Nicholas (Anelle), and great grandson, Jasper, who will forever cherish his stories, laughter, and warm hugs. Big Daddy was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan and Lula, and brothers Skip and Alex. Jim is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren, cousins Sally and Margie, Sister-in law Libby, nephew Steele, niece Elizabeth, along with many friends who were chosen family to him.
Known for his witty sense of humor, steadfast faith, and love of his family, Jim touched countless lives with his generosity and wisdom. In his free time, he enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and cheering for his Alma Mater, the West Virginia Mountaineers.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 1st at 1:15 at the Georgia National Cemetery, 1080 Scott Hudgens Drive, Canton, Ga. 30114 where military honors will be rendered. A reception will follow at the Fairways subdivision clubhouse at 505 Fairway Dr. Woodstock, GA 30189.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 3rd at Champy's, located at 191 Ocoee Crossing, Cleveland, Tennessee 37312, from 2pm-4pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Tunnels to Towers Foundation in Jim's memory.
Jim's legacy of service, love, and strength will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
