Obituary

James G. Pennock, 99, of Gilmanton, died on February 20, 2014 at the home of his son Larry Miller in Cleveland, TN. Mr. Pennock, the son of James Glynn Pennock and Cynthia Nelson Pennock Brown, was born June 27, 1914, in Woodsville, N.H. He lived in Gilmanton, N.H. for over 70 years. He was an army veteran of World War II and was awarded the Victory Medal for his service. He was a proud member of the American Legion for over 50 years. Mr. Pennock was an accomplished musician and played several stringed instruments, including guitar, violin and double bass fiddle. Mr. Pennock was the great-great grandson of Luke Brooks, who was part of the Franconia surveying crew who are credited with being the first white settlers to observe the Old Man of the Mountains. Mr. Pennock was employed by Scott & Williams in Laconia, Eastman Foundry in Concord, and Laconia Ball Bearing. He also cut right-of-way for Public Service.
He was the current holder of the Boston Post Cane (the presentation of which was originated by the Boston Post newspaper), which is presented to Gilmanton’s eldest resident. It was deemed especially fitting that Mr. Pennock received the cane, as he delivered the Boston Post newspaper when he was ten years old.
He is survived by four sons and three daughters-in-law: James Pennock of Laconia; Larry and Naomi Miller of Cleveland, Tenn.; Norman “Buzzy” and Carol Miller of Idaho; Dennis and Barbara Miller of Oregon. His survivors include daughters Winnie Martin of Derry, Joy MacDonald of Connecticut, and Elaine Fontes of California; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his son John’s widow, Kathy Pennock of Pittsfield.
Mr. Pennock was predeceased by his first wife, Florence, his second wife, Doris, and his son John.
A graveside memorial service in celebration of Mr. Pennock’s life will be held at the Smith Meeting House Cemetery in Gilmanton, on Saturday, June 28, 2014, at 10:00 A.M.
