James Dan Crook Jr, 93, of Cleveland, TN passed away peacefully Thursday February 15 th surrounded by family. Dan was born on May 8, 1930 in Asheville, NC to Mary and James Crook Sr.
Dan graduated in 1948 from Lee Edwards High School in Asheville. He attended North Carolina State University and graduated with a degree in Forest Management. After two years in the US Army Signal Corps, he received his Master's degree in Forest Engineering from NCSU. At the end of 1955, Dan joined the Forest Engineering Department of the Woodlands division of Bowater as a Forest Engineer and became a resident of Cleveland.
Dan was married to his loving wife Bobbie for 47 years prior to her death in 2009. He was a faithful member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He served on the vestry multiple times, held the role of Junior Warden on several occasions and enjoyed participating in many of the church activities and projects. Dan enjoyed spending time with his retired coworkers as part of their weekly "Liar's Club" meetings. He loved nature, the outdoors, hiking, working in his yard and helping family and friends with their projects. He was an avid and talented woodworker, where he made many things, including furniture, bird houses and whirligigs for family and friends. Dan was also active in local projects related to the Greenway, Deer Park and the playground at St. Luke's.
Survivors include his daughter Janet Crook and John McManus, his brother, Wiley Crook, his Dream Team of caregivers - Paula Cunnyngham, Cindy, Chris and McKenzie Cunnyngham, Christina and Eric Pearce and Samm Anderson, his sisters-in-law, Joanne Bristol, Mattie Jo Ledford and his neighbors and friends.
A special thanks to his Dream Team, and to the amazing staff at Avail Senior Living and Adorations Hospice for their loving care and support.
The family will receive family and friends at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday March 27th at the St. Lukes Parish Hall. The funeral will follow at 11:30 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church with Father Joel Huffstetler officiating. Interment will follow the service at St. Luke's Memorial Garden.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
