James Martin Cotton, Jr. passed away peacefully on March 2, 2025, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, craftsmanship, and devotion to family. He was born September 24, 1943, in Freeport, New York to the late James and Bertha (Torklesen) Cotton. On June 20, 1970, he married the love of his life Beverly Knight Markin of Trenton, NJ.
Throughout his life, he was the embodiment of dedication and self-reliance. An entrepreneur at heart, he successfully owned and operated several businesses over the years. A tireless provider for his family, he built their homes with his own two hands, crafted much of their furniture through his skilled woodworking, and was known for his ability to fix absolutely anything that broke down. His practical knowledge seemed limitless.
Jim never missed his children's or grandchildren's sporting events, showing up rain or shine to cheer them on from the sidelines. His presence was a constant source of support and encouragement.
An avid outdoorsman, he found joy as a talented boat mechanic and sporting clays enthusiast. In retirement, he embraced country living by raising cattle and spending time with his beloved animals. He had a special affinity for dogs and horses, with his Weimaraner, Norman, holding a particularly special place in his heart. His approach to life was methodical and forward-thinking, constantly building equity and upgrading homes to ensure a comfortable retirement--a goal he achieved and thoroughly enjoyed.
Jim is survived by his wife, Beverly; children Wendy (Andrew) Dirr and Jamie (West) Waters; grandchildren, Emmalyn and Andrew James Dirr, and Blaire, Blaine and Raelyn Waters; siblings Nancy (John) Mahler and Sue (Bob) Sailor; brother-in-law Jeff (Trisha) Markin.
He will be deeply missed, but his craftsmanship, wisdom, and love live on in the homes he built, the furniture he crafted, and the hearts of those who knew him.
