James Alfred Hughes Jr.

James Alfred “Jr.” Hughes, age 61 of Athens, Tennessee, passed away at home on Monday, February 21, 2022 after a brave battle with brain cancer. He was born on May 31, 1960 to James Alfred “Jim” Hughes Sr. and Linda Rose Henderson in St. Pete, Florida. He was a resident of McMinn County for 40 years and was a member of Mt. Verd Baptist Church. Jr. loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, making frequent trips to the beach, yard-selling, and trading on collectibles. He was a lifelong tradesman and handyman who never met a stranger. Jr. battled throat cancer in 2011 and had been in remission for 10 years. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him.

He was proceeded in death by his father, James Alfred “Jim” Hughes Sr., and stepmother, Delores Larson (Hughes). He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Jessica Morgan Beard and Seth Beard; Two sons and one daughter-in-law, James Thomas “J.T.” Hughes and Tully Hughes, and Joseph Roy “Joe” Hughes; 7 grandchildren, Rylan Hughes, Kingston Beard, Braylee Beard, Bryce Beard, Tinley Hughes, Foster Hughes, and Elsie Hughes; His mother, Linda Rose Henderson; Two brothers, William “Billy” Fleming (Samantha) and Dale Hughes; the mother of his children, Mary Henry; 2 nieces; And many special aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and friends.

A celebration of life will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Mt. Verd Church on Friday, March 4, 2022. There will be fellowship from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., followed by a message and prayer from Pastor Donnie Dalton.
