February 11, 1937 — June 6, 2016

Hugh Wheeler Callaway, Jr. passed away in his home Monday, June 6, 2016, following a lengthy and brave battle with cancer. Hugh (Hughsie) was the beloved son of Hugh and Frances Callaway, descendants of a Bradley County pioneer family. He was born on February 11, 1937, graduated from McCallie School in 1955, and graduated from the University of Tennessee Knoxville where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega.

After college he served in the United States Navy. Upon his return to Cleveland, Hugh had a long career in banking and real estate. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry and was the oldest living cradle member of the church, having been there from infancy to his passing. Hugh was a faithful member of the St. Luke's Friday morning prayer breakfast.

Mr. Callaway was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Glenn Wheeler Callaway; and Jane Hester Cummings, his sister-in-law.

Survivors include his wife of forty six years, Patricia Hester Callaway; son, Bryan Montague Callaway and his wife Heather Anne Callaway of Neptune Beach, Florida; son, Howard Montgomery Callaway; a beloved grandson, Montgomery Callaway of Panama City Beach, Florida; sister-inlaw, Peggy Ledford of Columbus, Georgia; five nieces, and his canine buddy Ruger II.

Services will be held at two o'clock p.m. June 9, 2016 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 320 Broad Street, Cleveland, Tennessee with The Rev. Rocki Profitt officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Garden at the church.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall at St. Luke's Episcopal Church before the service. Our family would like to express heartfelt gratitude for the Chattanooga Hospice Crisis Team consisting of Teresa McDaniels, Jeannie Smith and Elizabeth Brown. They provided compassionate comfort for Hugh during his last days and we will forever be grateful.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 5, Cleveland, Tennessee 37364 and/or to a memorial for his sister-in-law Jane (Mimi) Cummings. The "Mimi's Mile" Fund is to build a riding area for the children at St. Paul Preschool, 2101 Wildwood Avenue, Columbus, Georgia 31906.
