Obituary for Harold C. Jones
Harold Curtis Jones, age 87, resident of Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, March 12, 2024. Mr. Jones, son of the late Virgil Theodore Jones and Bessie Hendricks Jones, was born July 17, 1936 in Rockwood, Tennessee. He was a proud member of the Army National Guard, serving from 1959-1962 before being honorably discharged. Mr.Jones worked at the National Administration for Space and Aeronautics (NASA) in Cape Canaveral, Florida for over 30 years, eventually retiring as a chemist. While working at NASA, he was part of a select group of employees who were able to witness the first space shuttle launch from Cape Canaveral as well as its landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Cocoa Beach, Florida before transferring membership to First Baptist Church of Fort Oglethorpe. Besides serving in his church, Mr. Jones was an avid gardener and enjoyed spending time in the kitchen cooking and baking. He was especially famous for his peanut butter fudge. While he did enjoy traveling after his retirement, he would always look forward to hosting family and friends at his home. He is remembered by his family as a loving, quick-witted and dapper gentleman.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Mildred Massey and Burns Jones respectively as well as his previous wives Margaret Kirwin Jones of Cocoa Beach, Florida and Mary Ann Hall Jones of Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia.
Mr. Jones is survived by his daughter Candy Jones Mitchell and her husband Hal of Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia; two grandchildren, Alana Long and her husband Jordan and Jack Paulson; two bonus grandchildren, Samantha Hughes and her husband Micah and Tripp Mitchell and his wife Sarah; and six great-grandchildren along with many other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services are scheduled at First Baptist Church of Fort Oglethorpe, 2645 Old LaFayette Road, Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on Friday, March 15, 2024 at 3 p.m. with visitation beginning thirty minutes prior at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to First Baptist Church of Fort Oglethorpe, 2645 Old LaFayette Road, Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia 30742 or Amedisys/North Georgia Home Health Care, 122 Battlefield Crossing Court, Ringgold, Georgia 30736.
