Gretchen Coppinger

April 4, 1946 — November 26, 2024

Gretchen Coppinger, 78, of Cleveland, TN, passed away on November 26, 2024. Gretchen was a loving and adventurous soul, happiest when surrounded by friends, especially while spending time at the Hiwassee River.

She was a proud member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, where she served as a Flotilla Staff Officer and Vice Commander of Flotilla 16-5. Gretchen was among the first Personal Watercraft (PWC) operators authorized for patrol in Division 16, a testament to her pioneering spirit and dedication to service.

In addition to her time in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Gretchen was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling for several years. She also held a special place in the heart of the IKS Cleveland Lodge, where she was initiated at a young age. Proud of her family's legacy, with both her father and later her husband Sonny serving as Exalted Ruler, Gretchen became one of the first ladies initiated into the lodge, earning many accolades over the years.

She is survived by her "#2 Daughter" and caregiver, Lisa Patterson, and lifelong friend, Von Carson. She will be greatly missed by her fur-grandbaby, Sadie Jane.

Gretchen is preceded in death by her children, Chris Coppinger and Amy Coppinger; her parents, Lawrence and Genavieve Schow; and her sister, Barbara Mathers.

Gretchen's vibrant spirit, sense of adventure, and loving nature will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be dearly missed.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Broad Street Church in Ms. Coppinger's Name.

Final Care for Ms. Coppinger was provided by Companion Funeral and Cremation Service, Cleveland Chapel.
