On a sunny Monday morning, September 2nd, 2024, Gerald (Gary) E. Ruckgaber was peacefully reunited with his wife, Dragica (The Drags or Dee, as he so affectionately referred to her).
Gary was born on July 14, 1941, in Cleveland, Ohio to Elmer and Bernadette (Hulec) Ruckgaber and was a long-time resident of Cleveland, Ohio.
Gary dedicated his life in service to his country by enlisting in the Army, where he served as a military police officer in Albuquerque, New Mexico and then as a police officer in Cleveland, Ohio, where he retired as a Captain in the 4th District with over 40 years on the job. He was very well respected and liked by those he served with.
Gary had a huge giving heart and was fiercely loved by those around him. He was quick-witted and a talented storyteller, with most stories ending with lots of laughter. He would give the best advice and always had a shoulder to lean on or an ear to listen and would constantly help any way he could, especially for those he loved. He had a vast knowledge of history and was constantly expanding his knowledge by reading, doing a crossword puzzle (he would start his day with a hot cup of coffee and crossword puzzle), perusing the shelves of local libraries or bookstores, and playing trivial pursuit. He and his wife Dee enjoyed dancing, listening to music (they would go dancing a couple times a month), watching movies, and a good meal. We referred to him as the nightrider because he would go out in the evening for a nightly ride and listen to music. He also enjoyed walking, and we joked that he was doing the Ruckgaber Shuffle. Gary was the life of our party and will be deeply missed; however, we are rejoicing that he is with his wife and that she greeted him, no doubt saying: Gegi (as she referred to him), I have been waiting for you, how about a smooch!
Gary is preceded in death by his daughter, Anna Marie Ruckgaber and wife, Dragica Ruckgaber.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, especially of all the laughter, his daughter and son-in-law, Heather Ruckgaber-Fillyaw and Jason Fillyaw; his sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Ross Blakemore; his granddaughters, Makinley and Lillian Fillyaw; and his nieces Daneille Garcia and Michelle Dempsey. His memory will also be kept and cherished by many other friends and family.
The family will have no formal arrangements at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice in Gary's memory.
You are invited to share a personal memory of Gary or your condolences with his family at his online memorial located at www.companionfunerals.com. Companion Funeral & Cremation Service and the Cody family are honored to assist the Pendergrass family with these arrangements.
