George Arthur Dewitt

November 10, 1923 — May 27, 2019

It is with a broken heart and much sadness the family announces that George Arthur DeWitt, age 95, passed away on Sunday, May 27th. He was an incredible example, he gave his love, time, resources, and talents to making the world a better place. He was born November 10, 1923 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa to Wilbur DeWitt and Jesse McMillan. He graduated from The University of Iowa with a Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering. He was in Delta Chi fraternity. After leaving the Navy as a Pharmacist’s Mate 2nd Class at the end of WWII, he moved to Polk County, TN to work as a chemist for the Tennessee Copper Company until he retired. After retirement, he worked several years with Glen Ella Springs, helping cleaning up the pollution caused by decades from the TTC.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 69 years Shirley Jean Brauchet who passed away in January 2014; sisters, Elizabeth Wittmer of Salem, OR and Dorthea King, of Buena Vista, WV; son, Charles Arthur DeWitt; and grandson, Jeremy Dewitt both of Ducktown, TN.
He is survived by his daughter, Holly Williams of Athens, GA; grandson’s, Todd Harper of Athens, GA, Andy Harper of Winder, GA, Shannon DeWitt of Lawernceville, GA, and granddaughters, Jessica Hughes of Blue Ridge, GA and several great grandchildren.
George was very involved in his community. He helped build St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, where he was a lifelong Lay clergy and Treasurer. He traveled to Knoxville to pick up a pipe organ in pieces and brought it back and put it together and tuned it for this church. He worked to establish and build Copper Basin Medical Center. He was the Jaycee’s “ Young Man of The Year”.
