Gary Phillip Potts, of Cleveland, TN passed away peacefully in his home on February 28, 2025. He was born on July 13, 1954 in Atlanta, GA. He is survived by his loving wife, Kathryn Claudio Potts, with whom he was married [38 1/2 years], his sons Erich von Potts (Mary Katherine), Sean von Potts (Amanda), and Ian von Potts. He was much beloved by his four grandchildren, Patton and Whitten (Erich/Mary Katherine), and Magnolia and Charlotte (Sean/Amanda). He was preceded in death by his father, Laurence Alexander Potts, SR and his mother, Mardra Dennis Potts as well as his two brothers Laurence Potts, JR and Edmond Potts. He is survived by his cousins John Potts (Lauren), Susan Neill, Jimmy Dupree (Cindy), cousins and nieces and nephews.
In addition to being a devoted husband, father and grandfather, Gary was supremely proud of his family's rich military history and served as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps. Gary himself was a 3rd generation Marine and lived to see two sons carry on that family tradition, marking the 4th consecutive generation that served in the Marine Corps. He is remembered not only as a family man, a friend, and a warrior but for his humor, quick wit, and above all dedication to his values. A lover of history and culture, he often frequented Chickamauga battlefield with his family and ensured that the next generation understood and would honor the sacrifices of those who had come before and helped forge our nation.
Gary endured declining health for many years. In spite of his personal circumstances, he had a unique way of connecting with those he met and made the room warmer by his presence and brought laughter to challenging situations. He never wavered in his faith and devotedly prayed for his family and friends and those who crossed his path to care for him. He thanked God for his many mercies and knew heaven is where he would be at the end of his days. He was blessed beyond measure to live to see two of his sons married and meet his four grandchildren. Many of those he served with were not so fortunate.
