Garry E. York, 74, a resident of Cleveland and Memphis, passed away on Sunday evening, January 23, 2022, following an accident and illness. He was born on September 10, 1947, to the late J.D. and Mae H. York. A 1965 graduate of Bradley Central High School, Garry earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. After serving in the U.S. Army he joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Memphis, retiring after 30 years of service.
Garry was an avid bibliophile whose love of books was matched only by his love of great food and entertainment. He found joy by escaping into the world of storytelling whether in books, television, movies or theater and he shared that joy with others, especially his niece and nephews who remain convinced he was the inspiration for the movie “Uncle Buck.” Garry was also a life member of the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS 25246).
Keeping his memory alive are his wife, Jo Moore York; brother, Michael York (Creedia); niece, April York Berman (Michael); nephews: Mike York (Marie) and Jason York (Brittany); great-nephews: Jonathan and Nathaniel York, Lawson and Gavin Berman, and James Rodgers; and extended family and friends.
A graveside service and interment will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 29, 2022 at the Chestuee Memorial Association Cemetery located at Chestuee United Methodist Church with David Benton officiating and Jonathan York, Nathaniel York, Lawson Berman, Gavin Berman, James Rodgers, and Michael Berman serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends after the interment at the home of Michael and Creedia York. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Chestuee Memorial Association (c/o Sandra & David Benton, 2446 Valley Hills Dr NW, Cleveland, TN 37311) or Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.
