Eddie Scoggins

Capt. Eddie Scoggins, 78, a lifelong resident of Cleveland, TN passed away on Monday, September 23, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Cleveland on December 7, 1945, a son of the late Clarence Jr. & Syntha Scoggins.

Eddie is a 41-year veteran in the Criminal Justice Field. He began his career on July 1, 1970, with the Cleveland, Tennessee Police Department as a patrol officer. In 1974 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and given the responsibility of forming the first training division for the department. In 1976, he was elevated to the rank of Lieutenant, and again in 1978, to the rank of Captain.

In 1982, he entered the private security industry as the Security Manager for Peyton's Southeastern in Cleveland Tennessee. After seven years with the company, he accepted a position as Security Manager for Dr. Scholls Inc., also located in Cleveland, Tennessee where he remained for seven years.

In 1995, he returned to the law enforcement arena as a deputy with the Bradley County Sheriff's office. In 1996, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant as the Director and Instructor for the Bradley Central High School Criminal Justice Academy. In 1998, he was promoted to Senior Lieutenant. He was promoted to Captain in September 2005. Before his retirement, he was in charge of the Law Enforcement Services Division for the Sheriff's Office. He was also a member of FOP Lodge 8 and was the founder of the Bradley County Sheriff's office Honor Guard.

Captain Scoggins holds an Associate of Science degree in Law Enforcement from Cleveland State Community College, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Tennessee. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He holds a secondary education license in the State of Tennessee, which qualifies him to teach at the high school level. Captain Scoggins is also a US Navy Veteran who served with the Submarine forces in the pacific fleet during the Vietnam conflict.

In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by one great grandson Ethan Lavoy Scoggins.

Capt. Scoggins is survived by his loving wife Susan Carroll Scoggins, three children Jeffry Scoggins, Lt. Julie Quinn (Brian) and Charissa Newby (Eric), eight grandchildren Skylar, Brandon, Erica, Jacob, Emily, Kinsey, Liam and Brylee, one great grandchild Owen, brothers-in-law Robby Carroll (Christine) and Steve Carroll, special cousin Baron Carroll who has been there for Eddie during his lengthy illness and homegoing.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 27, 2024, from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the Shelli Cody Memorial Sanctuary at the Ridge Chapel of Companion Funeral Home located at 2412 Georgetown Road in Cleveland, TN.

A service celebrating his life will take place on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 11:00 AM there in the Ridge Sanctuary with the Reverend Guinn Green and the Reverend Gary Sears officiating.

The interment and committal service will follow in the Mt. Olive Cemetery with funeral honors provided by both the US Navy and the Bradley County Sheriffs Department. The Bradley County Sheriffs office and the Cleveland City Police Department will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers.
