Dr. Philip Jerald Dugan

Dr. Philip Jerald Dugan, 84, former director and founder of the Cleveland and Athens Regional Cancer
Centers, the Ocoee Regional Cancer Foundation, longtime resident of Birchwood, TN passed away
Friday, April 16, 2021 at home with his family after a courageous 1 year battle with MD Syndrome.
Dr. Dugan, a native of Los Angeles, CA graduated Loyala High School ’54 and Loyola University of Los
Angeles, CA ’58 (B.S.) and St. Louis Medical School, St. Louis, MO ’63. Pursuing his medical career, he
returned to Los Angeles with an Internship at the Queen of Angels Hospital, Los Angeles, CA ’64,
Residency Radiology Queen of Angels Hospital, Los Angeles, CA ’67. Dr. Dugan proudly served as a
member of the US Army Corp with the US PHS, Anchorage, AK ’69 (Commander). Following his
residency, Dr. Dugan was awarded a Fellowship of Radiation Therapy, Allegheny General Hospital
Pittsburgh, PA ’70. Dr. Dugan was an active member of the medical community in Chattanooga with
Staff Medial Radiation Therapy with Memorial Hospital, Parkridge Hospital, and Erlanger Hospital until
his death.
He was the founder and director of Radiation Therapy, Cleveland Regional and Athens Regional Cancer
Centers ’84 to ‘12 until his retirement, Founder Ocoee Regional Cancer Foundation 2012. He was
associate professor of radiology at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga ’80, and served on the
American Society of Therapeutic Radiation Oncology ’71 and the American Board of Radiology ’73.
Dr. Dugan was an avid world traveler. His many interests included flying, diving, fishing and sailing. Dr.
Dugan was longtime member of the Privateer Yacht Club and has held his private pilot license since ’88
and served as Director for Lightsport Aircraft of Chattanooga ’88. Above all, Dr. Dugan’s greatest passion
was the care and compassion for his patients, his dedication was unwavering in his 58 year career.
Dr. Dugan is proceeded in death by parents Nina and Charles Dugan, former spouses Norma Siegfried
and Susan Crawford, and beloved pet Bingo. He is survived by his longtime partner Angela O’Brien
(Jackson, TN) Children: Christopher Dugan (Gail) of Los Angeles, CA, Denise Skinner (Chris) of
Chattanooga, TN, Mark Dugan (Jill), Kelly Lashley of Charleston, SC, and Patrick Dugan (Natalie) of
Chattanooga, TN. Grandchildren: Daniel Block of Chattanooga, TN, Crawford, Jacqueline Pearse, and
Fletcher Lashley of Charleston, SC and Evelyn Dugan of Chattanooga, TN.

The family will receive friends on Monday, April 19, 2021 from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Cleveland Companion
Funeral Home and again on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at the Chattanooga The Basilica of St. Peter and
Paul at 9 a.m. with a graveside service following at 11 a.m. at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
