Dorothy "Dot" Kirkland Karr, 82, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Dot was born in Atlanta, Georgia, February 2, 1942, and grew up in Richmond Hill, Georgia, and previously lived in Maryland; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Savannah, Georgia; Stone Mountain, Lilburn, Loganville, Rex, Marrietta, Baxley and Vidalia before settling in Ootlewah, Tennessee. Many will remember Dot for her work as a dental assistant and insurance dental claims adjuster.
Throughout her life, Dorothy was known for having a passion for cooking, sewing, gardening, seafood consumption, reading books, politics and debate. She loved a good argument and rarely, maybe never, lost. However, her greatest joy was spending time with her family at our annual Oyster Roast and Thanksgiving feast. Her grandkids will forever remember her handcrafted turkey Piñatas and bunny rabbit cakes.
Dot is preceded in death by her parents, Josh and Beulah Kirkland, her sister, Joyce Mock and her husband of seventeen years, Bruce Karr, Sr. Her surviving family includes her sisters; Janine (Theoron) Darieng, Claudette (Harvey) Justice, and brother Josh "Chip" (Carla) Kirkland. Dot also leaves behind her four amazing children: Cheryl (Lindy) Williams, Lorraine (Glenn) Burton, Donna (Steve) Payne and Bruce Karr (Illy); eleven grandchildren; Julie, Brandon, Rachel, Ryan, Heath, Angela, Lisa, David, Macey, McKaylin and McCade; and seven great grands; Lily, Lula, Sam, Sawyer, Jolene, Evie and Abigail; and well as many nieces and nephews who lovingly called her "Aunt Dot". She is also survived by her two very loved cats, Archie and Gracie.
A family memorial service will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024 at 3:00pm at Honey Creek Woodlands in Conyers, Georgia.
The Companion Funeral Home in Cleveland, Tennessee is handling arrangements.
