Obituary
Dorothy B. “Dottie” Horton, 87, a resident of Athens, TN passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Thursday night, January 31st in an Athens Health Care facility. Dottie was born on June 16, 1925 in Chesterfield, SC a daughter of the late Carl and Beulah Burris. Dottie had made the Cleveland and Athens area her home for the past 53 years moving here from Rock Hill, SC. She was of the Christian faith and worked for many years at Carroll Printing locally. Dottie was a devoted mother, wife and grandmother. She dearly loved her grandchildren and was especially proud of great-grandson, Caden Troy Smith. She was musically inclined, playing the piano, organ & accordion for various churches. She also enjoyed knitting, crochet and various crafts. For our family, she lives on through those she loved and who loved her, and in the example of faith and courage she provided.
In addition to her parents, Dottie is preceded in death by her husband James R. Horton, one sister Stella Knighten and one brother Clyde Burris.
Dottie leaves behind to cherish her memory two daughters Wanda Kay Charles and husband John, and Wanda Ruth Bourne, on sister Estelle Burris, two brothers Frank Burris (Frances) and Bill Burris (June), granddaughters Lindsay Smith (T.J.) and Whitney Charles, three additional step grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one sister-in-law Thelma Burris and numerous other extended family members and friends.
A private graveside service will be held on Monday, February 4th at the Sunset Memorial Gardens located on North Lee Highway in Cleveland TN with the Reverend Gary Sears and the Reverend Jamie Sears officiating. John Charles, T. J. Smith, Steve Knighten, and Randall Burris will serve as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Frank Burris and Bill Burris.
The family will receive friends in the parlor of Companion Funeral & Cremation Service located at 2415 Georgetown Road NW from 1:30 until 2:30 on Monday prior to leaving for the service.
In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to Hospice of Chattanooga at P.O. Box 46, Chattanooga, TN 37401 in memory of Ms. Dottie.
