David "Mack" Warren Macklem

January 21, 1947 — September 3, 2019

David 'Mack' Warren Macklem, 72, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2019 at his home in Englewood after a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. Born in Hamilton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Warren William Macklem and Allie Berniece Brooks. He graduated from high school in Everett, Washington and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee.

He joined the Navy in 1965 after graduation to see the world and learn photography. After graduating from the Navy's Pensacola Photo School, he ran multiple Navy photo labs in his nine years of service. He spent his first years from 1966 through 1969 as a combat photographer/motion picture specialist in Southeast Asia. Following his Vietnam assignments, he was in charge of the NATO photographic lab in Germany. He left the Navy in 1974, earning many awards and honors including an Air Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon. After his honorable discharge, he bought a photo studio in Zion, IL. Following that he worked as a photographer and media specialist at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee from 1981 until he retired in 2011 when he and his wife moved to Englewood, TN.

He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Carolyn 'Sam' Macklem. He is also survived by three adult children, Lea Macklem, Tamara Macklem and Bryan Macklem, and five four-paws, Dougal, Dolly, Ian, Sam and Fiona; his brother and wife, William and Joy Macklem; three nephews and their wives, Jason and Whitney Macklem, Jon and Elizabeth Macklem, and Jeff and Ann Roguske; one niece and husband, Heather and Charlie Carver; plus 5 great nephews and 1 great niece.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Stephen Miller and his staff of Starr Regional Oncology Center and CARIS Healthcare hospice for their support and care.

A celebration of his life will be held at Companion Funeral home, 400 S. White Street, Athens, TN on Friday, September 13 from 5-7 p.m., service at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for memorials to made in his name to the McMinn Regional Humane Society, 3 Davidson Road, Athens, TN 37303.
