Darwin Charles Heisey, Jr., age 93, of the Brayton Community on Graysville Mountain, passed away Friday morning, August 9, 2019 at his home. He was born on March 24, 1926 in Hershey, PA to the late Darwin and Evelyn (Gates) Heisey. Darwin was also preceded in death by his baby brother Henry, his brother Paul and his sister Evelyn.
Darwin lived in Brayton Community for the last 14 yrs. He served as an Advanced Medical Tech, on hospital ships during World War II. He received his B.A. degree from Washington Missionary College in 1950, his MA from Kuztown St. Teachers College in 1967. His teaching career for 38 years: Principal and teacher of HamMidd Jr. Academy in OH; taught English and Voice at Shenandoah Valley Academy in VA; Principal of Edgecombe Jr. Academy in MD; 7 years for Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties; Public schools in MD; retiring after 24 yrs, as head of the English Department of Blue Mountain Academy in Hamburg, PA. He served on various educational boards including Middle States Accrediting Assn.; Gen. Conf. of Seventh-day Adventist Ed. Dept.: as a health educator he was a Member of the board of Hartland Institute of Health and Education in VA.
As Church Musician, Darwin spent summers as a singing evangelist, was tenor soloist for over 24 yrs. for the Methodist Church and Cantor for Jewish Synagogue in Baltimore, MD; 12 for Holy Cross United Methodist Church in Reading PA. His great tenor voice made him a natural to lead congregational singing; soloist for Weddings, Funerals and Church Services.
His acting career: Delaware Valley Drama Assn. December 1969, Lead actor as Artaban, The Other Wise Man. He enjoyed singing, walking, hiking, boating, traveling, and reading. He was a member of the Brayton, Seventh-day Adventist Church.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 74 years, daughter Darla (Vince) Waln, of Liberty Twp. OH, and son Dean (Debbie Payne) of Brayton Mountain. Five grandchildren: Julia Struntz, Ted Struntz, Deanna Prentice, Derrick (Lisa) Heisey and Dava Heisey. Eight great-grandchildren: Elizabeth and Katherine Struntz, Elena, Luke and Sarah Prentice, Emma, Owen and Anna Heisey. His sister Florence (Gary) Schneider and brother Earl (Julie) Heisey.
